Joseph Nizeti is an AACTA award-winning director, writer, producer and composer. With a background in music and a lifelong love of film, he brings a distinctive creative perspective to projects across the film and music industries. The central theme in his work is the power of creativity to transform lives and reshape how we connect with landscape and culture.
He is the co-director and co-writer of the award-winning feature documentary River (2021), the writer and director of the Björk-narrated IMAX documentary Fungi: The Web of Life (2023), and a co-writer of Floodland (2025) and Netflix’s ONEFOUR: Against All Odds (2023). He is also the writer, director and composer of the arts documentary Anatomy of a String Quartet (2022) and a co-producer of the science documentary series Phenomena (2021).
As a story consultant, script editor and co-writer, Joseph is sought after for his ability to sharpen narrative structure and deepen cinematic impact. Since 2015, he has contributed to more than 40 documentary and scripted projects, including Emmy Award–winning films and commissions for major global platforms and broadcasters such as Netflix, Universal, Disney/National Geographic, Stan, the BBC, ABC and SBS. He has collaborated extensively with emerging filmmakers, lectured at AFTRS Sydney and AIDC, and works regularly with Australia’s leading documentary producers.
Alongside his screen work, Joseph has an accomplished career as a composer, recording producer and musicologist, with experience spanning classical and electronic music, film scores and music for installations and immersive experiences. He contributed original music and score production to the AACTA and ARIA-winning scores for Mountain and River, and has toured frequently with the Australian Chamber Orchestra as a keyboardist, percussionist and guitarist.
Writer/Director/Producer
Joseph is currently directing/producing feature documentary Chasing The Last Giants (Working Title), shooting in Tasmania and on Vancouver Island, supported by Shark Island Foundation & Minderoo Foundation and with development support from Screen Australia and Screen NSW.
As director/producer, he is also developing EarthSong, an innovative music/environment series supported in development by Screen Australia and Screen Queensland.

Story Consultant & Script Editor
Joseph has contributed as a story consultant, development producer and script editor on a wide range of acclaimed film and television projects. Working closely with producers, directors and key creatives, he helps teams clarify intention, strengthen story and find a shared vision across the life of a film. His approach is grounded in deepening character, cinematic impact and narrative structure, with a collaborative approach that supports both experienced teams and emerging creatives.
His involvement is tailored to the needs of each project and stage of development, helping teams respond constructively to marketplace and commissioning feedback while nurturing the creative journey of filmmakers as their projects evolve. This can include strengthening funding pitches in early development, shaping storylines and treatments ahead of production, preparing contributors and creatives for interviews, working through the integration of archive, or collaborating closely with editors and key creatives throughout post-production.
Alongside his consulting work, Joseph has lectured on story at AIDC and AFTRS Sydney and maintains long-standing consultancy relationships with Australia’s leading production companies.

Composer &
Music Producer
As a recording producer and composer, Joseph has an accomplished background across classical, electronic and film music. Following an early career in theatrical scoring and electronic music production, Joseph progressed to work as Artistic Assistant to violinist and composer Richard Tognetti AO and later Multimedia Producer for the Australian Chamber Orchestra. During this seven-year period, Joseph collaborated as co-writer, producer and arranger with Richard Tognetti on original music for live touring and release in ACO productions and Australian feature film productions, in addition to performing with the ACO as a guest keyboard player, percussionist and guitarist.
As musicologist by training (Sydney Conservatorium of Music), Joseph has published orchestral programme notes, conducted pre-concert speaking engagements and produced podcasts and broadcast interview. Recent engagements include international touring with the Australian Chamber Orchestra as Multimedia Producer of Luminous (a collaboration with photographer Bill Henson).
